Des Moines

Maggie Dykshorn and Maria Vander PlaatsThe Golden CapitolMy jealous faceFor you non-Iowans and new Iowans, our wonderful states capital is pronounced deh MO-een. As led up to before in my previous posts, I have visited Iowa's esteemed capital, Des Moines. The reason? We have been studying the make-up of our country's government and how it came to be.
We had a lot of fun. Our whole grade got to go. We visited with the governor (for about 1 minute), we asked our senator questions (for about 3 minutes), toured the capital building (for approximately 15 minutes), and visited the Iowa Hall of Pride (for about 30 minutes).
You might say, 'Well, Oh wondrous Mitch, could there ever be anything wrong with such an esteemed building?' Well, oh thoughtful one, to answer your question, yes, I thought two things could have been better;
1. The bus rides. They were SIX HOURS LONG! Thats 12 hours back and forth! I'm usually okay with road trips, but I'm sure if they stuck you on a school bus with 30 other guys, you'd eventually be driven insane too.
2. It all seemed to be rushed through. I know with such a long bus ride, we don't have much time... but still. I just felt like It could've been enjoyed more if we'd had more time in places. The capitol is really a beautiful building, I wish the tour could've been longer. Also, the 'scavenger hunt' wasn't too exciting when you only had 2 minutes at each station (there were games at the stations, so it would've also been nice to stay longer and explore more)

Tony's class field trip is today and they went to the Capital building also, but it only takes 2 hours to get to Topeka (pronounced Toe peek a)it got it's name when a small Indian boy looked down at his torn moccasin and saw his toe and said "Look ma, my TOE PEEK EN" HAHAHA They get to go up into the dome, 296 steps to the top. He's getting a t-shirt that says "I climbed 296 steps today...what did you do". The dome was closed for many years because a few people jumped to their deaths. The kids and I went down and watched them hoist the statue to the top of the dome a few years ago. It was interesting. You can see it at www.kansastravel.org/kansasstatecapital.htm In case you want to compare buildings. :)
